Lagos taskforce nabs 44 street traders illegally occupying Mile 2 Oke bridge

The Lagos State Taskforce officials have arrested at least 44 street traders and vendors illegally occupying roadsides around the Mile 2 Oke bridge.

The chairman of the Agency, Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Adetayo Akerele, who led the operation, said it was part of a renewed effort to maintain order and ensure free movement along major highways in the metropolis.

According to Akerele, the exercise at the axis was carried out to address persistent complaints from motorists and commuters regarding obstruction, traffic congestion, and environmental hazards caused by illegal activities.

The suspects were apprehended for violating the state’s environmental and traffic laws against illegal trading along the highways and will be duly prosecuted.

The Taskforce chairman reiterated the agency’s commitment to restoring order in public spaces.

“Despite repeated warnings and enforcement exercises, some individuals continue to defy regulations by illegally trading on major roads and pedestrian walkways.

“This operation is part of the ongoing efforts to ensure compliance and enhance safety and ease of movement for all Lagosians.

“The operation is the third in the series of enforcement for compliance carried out on the bridge between January this year till date,” he stated.

Akerele, therefore, warned traders and those who evaded arrest to relocate their trading activities to designated centers designed for commercial activities or risk being arrested and have the wares confiscated.
