Lagos to act proactively against building hazards, says Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government on Monday said the demolition of distressed structures would continue as part of efforts to protect lives, property and the environment across the state.
Speaking on the demolition exercise in the Makoko area of the State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the exercise followed comprehensive safety assessments conducted by relevant government agencies, stressing that public safety remains a top priority of his administration.
According to the governor, buildings are required to be located at least 150 metres away from high-tension power lines, noting that the government has been engaging traditional leaders, including baales, in affected communities to ensure compliance.
Sanwo-Olu said some of the loudest criticisms often come from organisations that benefit from foreign humanitarian grants, adding that the government would not allow unsafe practices to persist.
“We will not hesitate to take decisive actions, including evacuation and demolition of distressed buildings, where they pose a threat to lives and public safety,” he said.
The governor noted that the measures were necessary to prevent avoidable disasters, particularly in densely populated areas, adding that the government prefers proactive interventions rather than reactive responses.
He appealed to residents to cooperate with government officials and comply with safety directives, emphasising that such actions are taken in the collective interest of the public.
“These decisions are never taken lightly, but they are essential to protect lives and ensure the wellbeing of our people,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor explained that the exercise is part of a broader environmental management strategy aimed at addressing structural failures, urban congestion and environmental risks in the state.
“Our responsibility goes beyond buildings; it includes protecting our environment and ensuring a safe, resilient and liveable Lagos for present and future generations,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu assured residents that the state government would continue to strengthen environmental monitoring and enforce building regulations to promote sustainable urban development and minimise risks associated with environmental degradation.
