Lagos to begin enforcement of single-use plastics ban from July 1 – Wahab

The Lagos State Government has announced that it will commence full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics across the state starting from July 1, 2025.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his X account on Friday. He emphasized that the move is part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle environmental pollution and promote sustainable waste management.
According to Wahab, the enforcement will target items such as plastic straws, disposable cups, cutlery, polythene bags, and other single-use plastic products that contribute significantly to flooding, blocked drainage systems, and environmental degradation in the state.
He noted that the decision to begin enforcement in July follows months of public sensitization and stakeholder engagement aimed at encouraging a gradual transition to eco-friendly alternatives.
The Lagos State Government has restated its determination to enforce a complete ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) by the end of January 2025.
