The Governor declared the event open, noting that the regatta, held across the state’s five divisions, underscores a shared vision of showcasing the beauty of Lagos’ waterways for residents and visitors to enjoy.
“We are truly excited to host this boat regatta, marking the start of a series of events that will light up this yuletide season,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“This first edition is a testament to our commitment to developing Lagos’ tourism potential. With one-third of Lagos surrounded by water, we must harness our waterways not just for transportation but also as a vibrant ecosystem for tourism.”
The Governor added, “Today, you’ll witness displays of water infrastructure and boat regattas from the five divisions of Lagos. It promises to be a day of sheer tourism, fun, and an appreciation of the beauty and serenity of Lagos’ waterways. Let us relax and soak in the hospitality and charm of Lagos.”
Sanwo-Olu also embarked on a boat ride alongside members of the state executive council, encouraging Lagosians to take advantage of opportunities to unwind and explore the scenic Lagos waterways.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, emphasized the regatta’s role in promoting the rich culture of Lagos’ waterways. She described the event as a catalyst for economic growth, boosting tourism and creating opportunities for local businesses.
“This event reinforces Lagos’ status as a premier global destination,” Benson-Awoyinka said. “It celebrates community heritage and sustainable practices through a multi-sensory experience of parades, dance performances, innovative layouts, and captivating visuals.”
