Lagos unveils campaign targeting hypertension, obesity, diabetes

…says 8.67 million residents affected
The Lagos State government has disclosed that approximately 8.67 million residents are living with hypertension, signaling a major public health challenge.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made the announcement during a press briefing on Friday, launching a state-wide campaign to promote awareness and management of hypertension and diabetes under the theme “Know Your Numbers and Control Your Numbers.”
In addition to the high rate of hypertension, Abayomi reported that 3.48 million residents are affected by obesity, while 1.73 million are living with diabetes. To tackle these growing health concerns, the state will offer free screenings for hypertension and diabetes from October 28 to November 3, 2024, with the goal of reaching at least 800,000 residents.
“We may even exceed the 800,000 target by the end of the week,” Prof. Abayomi stated, emphasizing the state’s commitment to raising health awareness and providing accessible care.
The free screenings will be available across all state-owned hospitals, over 300 Primary Healthcare Centres, and general hospitals. Prof. Abayomi encouraged residents to take advantage of these services, noting that hypertension and diabetes often present symptoms only at advanced stages, leading to severe consequences, including stroke, heart attacks, and kidney failure.
“Regular check-ups are essential, as hypertension and diabetes not only kill but also inflict lasting damage on patients,” Abayomi urged, highlighting the campaign’s importance for early detection and prevention.
The state’s week-long campaign underscores the critical need for public health interventions in Lagos, as the government works to reduce the prevalence of these life-threatening conditions and foster a healthier population.
