Lagos unveils new measures to attract investment in sports sector

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has introduced new measures aimed at attracting increased investment into the sports sector as part of efforts to unlock its economic potential.

Speaking on the development, the Director-General of the LSSC, Mr Lekan Fatodu, said the framework was designed to reposition sports as a key contributor to the state’s economic growth.

He explained that the initiative centres on a structured framework to map sports assets, standardise engagement processes and create clear visibility for investment opportunities across the sector.

According to the commission, the plan will support joint venture development of sports facilities, streamline operations for franchise-based local leagues, and provide institutional backing for startups in sports technology, fitness, media and analytics.

The commission also disclosed plans to deploy data-driven tools to monitor participation trends, identify infrastructure gaps and evaluate the commercial potential of various sporting disciplines in the state.

“We are deliberately transitioning the Lagos sports narrative from mere recreation to serious economic value creation. Talent is abundant in this State, but talent without an underpinning business ecosystem is unsustainable,” Fatodu said.

He added that the measures are intended to de-risk the sector for investors while creating opportunities for sports technology innovators, manufacturers and franchise operators to expand their operations in Lagos.

The director-general further noted that the initiative aligns with the economic agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, which positions sports as a catalyst for youth engagement and enterprise development.
