Lagos Wastewater Office seals buildings for discharging sewage into public drains

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed two residential buildings in different parts of the state for illegally discharging raw sewage into public drains, causing pollution and endangering public health.

The affected properties are located at 11 Victoria Onipede Street, Abule Egba, and 2 Tunde Fisayo Street, Lekki, Eti-Osa. Officials said the buildings were deliberately releasing untreated wastewater into the environment through pumping machines rather than engaging licensed sewage dislodgers to properly evacuate their septic tanks.

General Manager of LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, said the practice was not only illegal but also posed serious health risks to residents by exposing them to communicable diseases while degrading the environment.

He explained that enforcement officers of the agency investigated the properties and documented evidence of the infractions before carrying out the clampdown. “This act is unacceptable and against the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017,” he stated.

Afolabi stressed that the state has zero tolerance for environmental pollution, warning that any property or facility found violating wastewater management regulations would be sanctioned.

He advised Lagos residents to adopt proper wastewater disposal methods and embrace hygienic practices to support the state’s vision of a safer and cleaner environment.

The General Manager also urged citizens to report cases of environmental nuisance that could threaten public health. Complaints can be lodged through the office’s hotlines: 08022022397 and 07025332163, or via its official social media handles.
