LAMATA moves to finalise Lagos freight policy after stakeholder consultations

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has concluded its fifth and final stakeholder engagement on the development of the Lagos Freight Policy and Regulatory Framework, as the state moves towards a more efficient and coordinated freight transport system.

The engagement, held under the theme, “Smart Freight for a Thriving Lagos,” brought together leaders and representatives of market associations, commodity groups and logistics operators to discuss challenges affecting the movement and distribution of goods across Lagos.

The consultation, funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and implemented with technical support from Innovative Transport Solutions (ITS) and FAOCON, is part of LAMATA’s effort to develop a predictable, cost-effective and sustainable freight system.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, the Technical Adviser, Planning, Engr. Osa Konyeha, said efficient freight movement was critical to the cost and availability of goods in the state.

“Every day, large volumes of food, agricultural produce, clothing, electronics and automotive parts move from ports, farms and factories into markets across Lagos. The efficiency of these movements directly impacts businesses, traders and ultimately, consumer prices,” he said.

Konyeha identified congestion, delays in last-mile deliveries, difficult market access, inadequate loading and unloading facilities and parking constraints as some of the factors increasing logistics costs and contributing to product spoilage.

He said the proposed policy would address the challenges through clear and reliable guidelines for freight operations while encouraging investment in logistics infrastructure and services.

Participants also discussed last-mile access, loading and unloading arrangements, storage, parking and other supply chain challenges affecting major commercial centres such as Mile 12, Oshodi, Balogun, Alaba International, Computer Village and Ladipo Auto Market.
