LAMATA set to deliver Blue Line phase two in 2027, full operation commences early 2027

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that the second phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line will be delivered in 2027, with full operations set to begin in the first quarter of the same year.
Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed this during an inspection tour of key transport infrastructure projects across the state. The tour included Marina and Mile 2 interchanges—major hubs funded by the Lagos State Government and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
Akinajo expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and confirmed that the Blue Line infrastructure would be completed by 2026. She emphasized that the timely delivery of the project is crucial to easing transportation challenges in the city.

The inspection also covered the ongoing construction of a new Mazamaza bridge, which replaces an older structure found unfit to carry the rail infrastructure required for the project’s next phase.
Highlighting the project’s significance, Akinajo noted that the Blue Line’s second phase will greatly improve mobility and interconnectivity. “The goal of these interchanges is to create a seamless intermodal transport system, allowing for easy transitions between bus, rail, and water,” she said.

She added that provisions for non-motorized transport, including cycle paths and pedestrian walkways, have been integrated into the designs at Marina and Mile 2, ensuring accessibility and sustainability.
Akinajo was accompanied by a team of stakeholders and technical experts, including Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga, Engr. Osa Konyeha, Mr. Kolawole Ojelabi, Engr. Abidemi Atobatele, Dr. Babatunde Osho, and Mr. Alexandre Lorot of AFD.
The LAMATA boss called on Lagosians to take ownership of the infrastructure. “I urge Lagosians to safeguard the infrastructure and use it responsibly,” she appealed, noting the long-term benefits the project will bring to the state’s transport landscape.
