LASG seals Oko Oba Abattoir over poor hygiene

By Adeola Ogunrinde –
The Lagos State Government has shut down the Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege Local Government Area over poor hygiene standards observed within the facility.
The abattoir was sealed indefinitely following reports of unhygienic practices that violated environmental laws guiding food processing and public health in Lagos.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the decision followed an inspection of the premises after receiving public complaints.
“During our inspection of the abattoir facility, we announced the indefinite closure of Oko Oba Abattoir, Agege, over unhygienic practices and violations of various environmental laws,” Wahab said.
He expressed the government’s dismay at the filth and lack of adherence to health regulations, adding that such conditions pose serious public health risks and cannot be tolerated.
Wahab was accompanied by officials from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), who supported the inspection as part of a broader enforcement campaign.
He emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring all food handling and processing facilities meet minimum hygiene standards to protect residents’ health.
“No individual or business will be allowed to endanger the lives of others through negligence or reckless disregard for the law,” Wahab said.
