LASG to roll out 2,000 CNG buses before end of 2024

…to launch 231 electric vechicles in June
Lagos State Government has concluded plans to roll 2, 000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses before the end of 2024.
The state government would also launch about 231 electric vehicles by the end of June, 2024.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Tuesday, at the 2024 ministerial briefing on the activities of the ministry during the administration of Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu.
According to Osiyemi, the state government is already engaging a private company on the acquisition of the CNG buses which will be distributed in two phases of 1,000, scheduled to be introduced by the end of 2024.
He explained that measure is part of effort to alleviate the effects of fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government on the residents.
“We are also looking at introducing about 231 electric vehicles on our road to complement the existing fleet of vehicles using diesel and petrol,” Osiyemi stated.
The initiative is to deliver cheaper, safer and more climate-friendly energy to residents and Nigerians in general. Osiyemi also noted that in the last two months, the Lagos State Government has impounded 5,000 okadas.
He also noted that there no exact fine for cars impounded because it pass one-way.
He said “To reduce human interface, the Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices handled by the VIS Officers captured 10, 421 violations between January, 2023 and March, 2024. On driver’s license, the Agency has issued 10, 964, 23 drivers License and 101, 457 Rider’s Cards between Year 2020 and 2024.
“ Yearly renewal of Proof of Ownership, POC, introduced by the Federal Government which commenced on 22 August, 2023 for the purpose of having national data bank for Security and Safety. Daily monitoring routine checks through the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition ,ANPR, technology for prescribed particulars violations, 53 of the ANPR Cameras are installed at different locations of the State.
“The use of hand-held devices for enforcement of rickety vehicles, overloaded vehicles, blacklisted vehicles, unauthorized/illegal and unregistered vehicles etc.
Usage of ANPR to capture other related traffic offences, vehicle moving against traffic. The ANPR captured 856,680 violations from January 2023 to March, 2024.”
The commissioner noted that there has been a significant increase in drivers’ training, which has had a positive impact on the driving culture in Lagos.
“The average number of drivers trained per year from 2019 to 2022 is 53,386. However, from January 2023 to April 8, 2024, the average number of trained drivers per year is 63,344. Overall, there has been an 8.5 percent increase in the number of drivers trained during the first year of the second term of the present administration”, he added.
