Late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu laid to rest in Lagos

The remains of Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu, widely known for her hit song Omije Oju Mi, arrived in Lagos on Thursday for burial, marking an emotional farewell for family members, friends, and colleagues.
Her body was conveyed to Atan Cemetery in the Yaba area of the state, where she was buried in an open grave beside the late Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Allwell Ademola. The arrival of her casket drew tears and solemn moments among mourners present at the cemetery.
Akinnanu’s burial followed weeks of uncertainty after her family suspended earlier arrangements over concerns surrounding the circumstances of her death. The family had insisted on prayers, consultations, and spiritual reflections before proceeding with final rites, stressing that there was no need to rush her burial.
The decision initially led to disagreements with some of her friends and colleagues, who had announced burial plans without full consultation with the family. Those plans, which included multiple public events, were later cancelled.
After further discussions, a fresh burial schedule was agreed upon, culminating in her interment on January 29, 2026. Family members said the revised arrangements ensured the late singer received a dignified and honourable farewell.
