LAUTECH student shot dead at sign-out event in Ogbomoso

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the death of one of its students, Mr. Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola, during an unauthorised sign-out ceremony in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

Babalola, a 300-level Mechanical Engineering student, was shot on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Ultramodern Wazo Market.

In a statement, Registrar Olayinka Balogun said the university banned sign-out activities in 2023 and had warned hotels in the area not to host such gatherings. Despite the directive, investigations revealed that a group of students held the event at the market’s football pitch.

The celebration turned deadly when Babalola was shot. Witnesses said he attempted to leave on a motorbike but collapsed and was later found unresponsive.

Police officers, alerted by the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, recovered a bag from his body that confirmed his identity.

His remains were taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.

Balogun said the university is cooperating with police investigations and has informed the deceased’s family.

The management expressed condolences to his relatives and friends, praying for his eternal rest.
