LAWMA arrests illegal waste collectors in Victoria Island, Ikoyi

By Adeola Ogunrinde –
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Sunday carried out a clampdown on illegal waste collectors operating around the Victoria Island and Ikoyi axis.
LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this via his X handle (formerly Twitter), saying the enforcement teams conducted targeted operations to apprehend cart pushers operating without approval.
He noted that the activities of illegal waste collectors compromise public sanitation and violate Lagos State environmental laws.
“Ongoing clampdown on unregistered waste collectors continues. Cart pushers arrested and carts confiscated. All residents and businesses are advised to engage only LAWMA-accredited PSP operators. Illegal waste handlers pose threats to both environmental hygiene and urban safety.

“LAWMA reiterates zero tolerance for indiscriminate waste disposal. Offenders face fines or imprisonment,” Gbadegesin stated.
He warned that property owners must verify the credentials of PSP operators and comply with proper waste disposal guidelines to avoid sanctions.
Gbadegesin added that illegal waste disposal attracts penalties, including fines starting from ₦250,000, confiscation of equipment, and possible prosecution under the Lagos State Environmental Laws (2017).
