LAWMA MD emphasizes environmental role in malaria prevention

Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has highlighted the critical role of maintaining a clean environment in combating the spread of malaria.

In a statement issued to mark this year’s World Malaria Day, themed ‘Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world’, Gbadegesin emphasized that a clean environment is crucial in reducing the prevalence and severity of malaria.

Citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO), which reported approximately 249 million cases of malaria worldwide in 2022, he stressed that preventive measures, particularly ensuring a clean environment, are essential strategies in the fight against the disease.

He also urged residents to actively participate in efforts to maintain cleanliness by disposing of waste properly, eliminating stagnant water, and adopting good sanitation practices.

“Each of us has a responsibility to keep our surroundings clean. By properly disposing of waste, eliminating stagnant water, and adopting good sanitation practices, we can protect ourselves and our communities from the devastating effects of malaria”, he stated.

He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and public health through effective waste management and educational campaigns.

The environmental agency boss further underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies, communities, and individuals in achieving a cleaner and healthier environment, which ultimately contributes to reducing the burden of malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
