LAWMA rewards outstanding female sweepers, expands welfare with Ilera Eko Health Scheme

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) haa celebrated female street sweepers and other women in its workforce with free health screenings and special recognition awards to mark International Women’s Day 2026.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, delivered the welcome address at the Authority’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa, stating that the programme was organised to honour the dedication and resilience of female street sweepers and other women contributing to environmental cleanliness across the state.
Gbadegesin said the celebration featured rewards and free medical screenings for female staff and street sweepers as part of efforts to promote preventive healthcare and improve their well-being.

He commended the female workforce of LAWMA, particularly sanitation workers, for their commitment and invaluable role in keeping the city clean and livable, describing them as resilient women deserving recognition.
He also noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had approved a health insurance policy for the sweepers, adding that their health insurance cards would be ready for collection in the coming weeks.
According to him, about 16,000 sweepers will have free access to medical services under the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme.
Gbadegesin urged the workers to prioritise their health through regular medical check-ups and also emphasised the importance of educating and empowering their children, particularly the girl child.
Five outstanding female street sweepers were honoured with gifts during the event, while two beneficiaries, Mary Omoyosi and Taiwo Azeez, commended the Lagos State Government and LAWMA management for their commitment to staff welfare and prompt payment of salaries.
