Lawmaker backs Super Eagles to win 2025 AFCON title

The Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to clinch the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

Honourable Amadu, who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, based his optimism on the quality of Nigerian players and their current performances in European leagues.

Reacting to the AFCON group stage draw held on Monday night in Morocco, Amadu cautioned the team against complacency despite being placed in a seemingly favorable group.

“Yes, the group looks simple, but the players need to be careful not to approach games with the mindset that they have won even before kicking a ball,” he said during an appearance on NTA AM Sports on Tuesday.

“One of the most dangerous things in football is overconfidence and underestimating opponents in a tournament like AFCON. No doubt, we have the talent, but the players must be ready to fight like wounded lions to qualify from the group and advance to the final.”

Amadu stressed the importance of teamwork and preparation, urging the Super Eagles to stay mentally and physically focused. “If they can play as a team and prepare adequately, then the trophy is ours, Insha Allah,” he stated.

He also called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure proper preparations for the tournament. “The NFF must, as a matter of urgency, put adequate structures in place to create an easy path to victory,” Amadu said.

He noted Nigeria’s close loss to the host nation in the last AFCON final and the back-to-back wins of the African Player of the Year award by Nigerian players as evidence of the team’s quality.

Nigeria is drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, with their opening match set against Tanzania.
