Lawmakers urge Makinde to modernize local government secretariats in Oyo

By Adejayan Gbenga –

The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged Governor Seyi Makinde to commence the rehabilitation of dilapidated local government secretariat buildings across the state to improve administrative efficiency and workers’ welfare.

The call followed a motion moved by Hon. Akintunde Olajide, representing Lagelu Constituency, and co-sponsored by Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, House Leader Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, Hon. Olusola Owolabi, and Hon. Peter Ojedokun during plenary on Monday in Ibadan.

Hon. Olajide, who chairs the House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters, and State Honours, noted that many local government secretariats in the state are in poor structural condition and unfit for modern administrative operations.

He lamented that the worsening state of the facilities has weakened public confidence in government institutions and exposed both staff and residents to health and safety risks.

According to him, the rehabilitation of the secretariats is a vital step toward improving productivity, accountability, and inclusiveness in local governance, in line with Governor Makinde’s sustainable development agenda.

Olajide explained that upgrading the structures would not only restore dignity and functionality to local government operations but also boost grassroots development and economic growth across the state.

The Assembly resolved to urge the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters to conduct a comprehensive assessment of all secretariats with a view to their immediate rehabilitation.

Lawmakers also encouraged Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives from private sector operators to support the renovation, while calling on the Executive to prioritize budgetary provisions for the modernization of local government secretariats.
