Lead with empathy, give your little—Oluremi Tinubu tells First Ladies at global forum

By Kunle Sanni –

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called on women in positions of influence to make meaningful contributions to their societies—no matter how small—emphasizing that even modest efforts can have life-changing impacts.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Global First Ladies Alliance Academy in New York, Tinubu addressed First Ladies from across continents, encouraging them to embrace their leadership roles with boldness, purpose, and empathy.

“Don’t be afraid to give your little,” she said. “That little could be a lifesaver for someone. Be bold to confront your challenges, and that is what we are doing—and we are beginning to see the impact gradually.”

Reflecting on the role of a First Lady, she noted the delicate balance the position demands: “What you do will either complement your husband or be a burden to him. So do what you can, and do it right.”

Tinubu highlighted her work through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), an intervention platform aimed at empowering women and youth across Nigeria. She described the initiative as part of her efforts to bring innovative solutions to the country’s most vulnerable populations.

The high-level leadership academy brought together First Ladies and former First Ladies from regions including Africa, Central America, Europe, and the Caribbean. Among the attendees were First Ladies Ana Dias Lourenço of Angola, Anna Hakobyan of Armenia, Eliza Reid of Iceland, Monica Chakwera of Malawi, and Fatima Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.

Participants discussed global challenges such as mental health among youth, maternal health, food security, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

Dr. Cora Neumann, founder of the Global First Ladies Alliance and a Montana State Senator, praised the collective leadership of the participants.
