Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, while celebrating Sallah with soldiers on Friday, called for improved welfare for military personnel, saying the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform deserve greater attention and support.
Makinde made the call during the Chief of Army Staff Special Sallah Celebration with troops of the 2nd Division of the Nigerian Army at the Forward Operating Base in Igbeti, Olorunsogo Local Government Area of Oyo State.
While commending the troops for their dedication, he noted that their efforts have contributed to making Oyo State one of the safest in the country.
The governor said, “The peace and security maintained by the military have enabled progress in key sectors such as the economy, education, and healthcare,” adding that without security, development and investment would not be possible, hence the reason why the sacrifices of soldiers must be matched with improved welfare and support.
Makinde further expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Nigerian Army, including the Chief of Army Staff and other senior officers, for policies and programmes aimed at improving troops’ welfare, while also encouraging the soldiers to remain committed to their duties, assuring them of continued support from his administration.
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, represented by Major General M.D. Shagaya, praised the officers and men of the division for their discipline, resilience, and commitment, which he said have contributed to improved security in the area.
He also honoured personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty and appreciated the support received from the Oyo State Government.
Similarly, the General Officer Commanding, 2nd Division, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, thanked Governor Makinde for his consistent support to the Army over the years, noting that events such as the Sallah luncheon help boost the morale of troops and strengthen cooperation between the military and the state government.
