Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has elevated 14 High Chiefs and Baales in Oyoland to the status of crown-wearing Obas, describing the move as a call to deeper responsibility, community service and stronger collaboration with government for development and security.
The newly elevated traditional rulers received their crowns and instruments of office during a ceremony held on Friday at Olivet Baptist High School, attended by government officials, traditional leaders and political stakeholders from across the state.
Representing the governor at the event, Deputy Governor Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal said the administration remained committed to strengthening traditional institutions, promoting peace and fostering inclusive growth across communities.
Among the newly crowned Obas were the Alago-Oja of Ago Oja, Alajagba of Ajagba, Onimeleke of Imeleke, Alaaguo of Aguo and Alapaara of Apaara, alongside several other High Chiefs.
Makinde noted that the elevation formed part of deliberate efforts to preserve cultural heritage while ensuring that traditional rulers play active roles in governance, peacebuilding and grassroots development initiatives.
He urged the monarchs to lead with integrity, fairness and a strong sense of duty, emphasising that their new status comes with higher expectations to maintain peace and improve citizens’ welfare.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, described the occasion as culturally significant, noting that it symbolised unity, continuity and renewal within the Yoruba traditional institution.
