Makinde explains inclusion of opposition figures in Oyo @50 Anniversary Planning Committee

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has explained the rationale behind appointing members of opposition parties into the newly inaugurated Oyo State @50 Anniversary Planning Committee, emphasizing that his administration values competence and unity above political differences.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held at the Executive Council Chamber, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, Governor Makinde said the 50th anniversary of Oyo State represents a major milestone in the state’s history and should be celebrated by all, regardless of political affiliation.
The governor announced an 11-member committee chaired by a former House of Representatives member, Hon. Saheed Akinade Fijabi, with a former Head of Service, Alhaja Ololade Agboola, serving as Deputy Chairperson, and Mrs. Ronke Adedayo as Secretary. Other members include Dr. Z.O. Ajuwon (OON), Mr. Mustapha Rasaq Areo, Alhaja Fatimah Ololade Azeez, Mr. S.A. Adejumo, Pastor John Olasunkanmi Alabi, Alhaji Gafar Bello, Compol Fatai Owoseni (rtd), and Mr. Samuel Adegboyega Badejo.
Makinde stated that the inclusion of individuals from different political backgrounds demonstrates his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and merit-based appointments. According to him, the celebration of Oyo State’s 50th anniversary is not a partisan event but a collective reflection on the state’s growth and achievements over the years.
“From the composition, you will see that there is no PDP or APC. We don’t do that here in Oyo State. Look at the chairman of this committee; we fought in 2019 and we defeated him then, but when we want to do anything for the state, we go for the best hands, whether they are in APC, PDP, or elsewhere,” the governor said.
Makinde also explained that the committee’s primary responsibility is to showcase the state’s achievements across different sectors in the past five decades and to recognize individuals who have contributed to Oyo’s development. He urged the committee to reach out to past leaders, their families, and citizens who have played significant roles in the state’s progress.
The governor further noted that the celebration should also serve as a reminder that leadership is a continuum and that every administration builds on the efforts of its predecessors. He called for unity and collaboration among political actors, stressing that political parties come and go, but the state remains.
Present at the inauguration were notable dignitaries including Mrs. Mutiat Ladoja, wife of a former governor; Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, PDP National Deputy Chairman (South); Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi, former deputy governor; Justice Iyabo Yerima, Chief Judge of Oyo State (represented by Justice M.O. Olagunju); Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin (represented by his deputy, Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi); Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, Secretary to the State Government; and other senior government officials.
