Makinde immortalises late APC lawmaker Akinremi ‘Jagaban’ with new Ibadan GRA

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has named a new Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Samonda, Ibadan, after the late All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker, Prince Olaide Akinremi, popularly known as “Jagaban.”

Akinremi, who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency from 2019 until his death on July 10, 2024, was honoured for his contributions to his constituency and the state.

The unveiling ceremony, held along Dominion University Road, was performed on the governor’s behalf by his deputy, Bayo Lawal. Makinde assured that the housing project would meet high standards, with necessary infrastructure provided, and confirmed the ongoing reconstruction of the UI–Samonda–Sango/Poly link road.

“This is not about politics but about immortalising a man who served his people diligently,” Lawal said, adding that the decision to honour Akinremi was made shortly after his passing.

Ibadan North Local Government Chairman, Oluseun Olufade, and High Chief Akinade Fijabi praised the governor’s inclusive leadership. Abideen Akinremi, speaking for the family, expressed gratitude for the gesture.

However, the Oyo State APC accused Governor Makinde of exploiting Akinremi’s name to cover up the alleged sale of the state-owned Trans Amusement Park in Ibadan for private housing.

The party condemned the conversion of the recreational facility into estates, calling it a politically motivated “gimmick” ahead of upcoming elections. It also criticised Makinde for allegedly destroying public amenities and selling the land to private interests.
