Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has mourned the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin I, who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday.

The governor received a delegation from the late monarch’s family, including the former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero; the monarch’s younger brother, Mr. Osuolale Owolabi Olakulehin; and his son, Aremo Olasumbo Owolabi.

Governor Makinde assured the family of the state’s support, stating that the government would stand by them and ensure the late monarch receives a befitting burial.

“We don’t always want them to go; we want them to stay with us. But God has designed our bodies for a certain period,” the governor said. “I commiserate with the family and all of us. The government will definitely play its role.”

Makinde also shared that the day marked the 13th anniversary of his own father’s passing, praying for strength for the Olubadan’s family to bear the loss.

Chief Oyero, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed appreciation to Governor Makinde for supporting Oba Olakulehin’s ascension despite earlier controversies.

He commended the state for the support provided during the monarch’s reign, especially the historic coronation ceremony.

Oba Olakulehin, who marked his 90th birthday on July 5, ascended the throne in July 2024 as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
