Makinde reaffirms validity of Oyo PDP congress, backs consensus candidacy

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed the validity of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congress held in the state in November 2025, declaring that the outcome will stand despite ongoing disputes within the party.

Makinde made this known on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission in Ibadan, where party leaders and key political figures gathered to deliberate on the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor’s position comes amid a deepening crisis within the PDP at the national level, triggered by disagreements over the legitimacy of the party’s convention and leadership, as well as a series of legal battles involving opposing factions.

Despite the tensions, Makinde expressed confidence in the party’s strength in Oyo State, stressing that ensuring the PDP’s participation in the 2027 elections remains a top priority.

“We’re comfortable in our PDP,” he said, dismissing speculations about a possible defection and assuring supporters of his continued loyalty to the party.

He explained that the PDP is currently navigating internal challenges, which he described as both a contest among aspirants and a broader effort to secure the party’s place on the ballot.

To address potential divisions, Makinde disclosed that the party would adopt a consensus approach in selecting candidates, noting that the strategy would help maintain unity and reduce internal conflict.

He also revealed that first-term lawmakers at both the National and State Assembly levels would be given automatic tickets, a move aimed at rewarding loyalty and performance within party ranks.
