Makoko, Shogunro: Lagos Assembly orders fresh community committees, sets 2-week reconciliation deadline

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its directive suspending all construction activities on the demolished sites in Makoko and Shogunro communities, pending the outcome of reconciliation efforts expected to be concluded within two weeks.
The House also adopted the recommendation of the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on E-GIS, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, establishing a 250-metre setback from the Third Mainland Bridge and an additional 250-metre buffer beyond the power line corridor. The measure effectively prohibits all forms of development within the designated areas.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday with community leaders from Makoko and Shogunro, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, said the Assembly, in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the E-GIS Office, had directed each affected community to constitute a 10-member committee.

Adams urged stakeholders to close ranks and take decisive steps to address residents’ concerns, stressing that the committees must include women, youths, students and traditional leaders to ensure an inclusive and lasting resolution.
He added that the State Executive Council is finalising compensation arrangements for affected residents as dialogue continues.

Reacting after the meeting, Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Bayo Adefuye, expressed satisfaction with the resolutions reached, noting that relief materials and palliatives had already been distributed by both the state and local governments.
Adefuye said the Assembly committee’s plan to conclude its assignment within two weeks was achievable. He urged residents to comply strictly with the directives and cautioned community leaders against pursuing personal interests that could undermine peace and the reconciliation process.
