Manchester United dismiss Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge
Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after 14 months at the helm, bringing an end to a turbulent spell marked by poor results, internal tensions and inconsistent performances.
The Premier League club confirmed the decision in a statement on Monday, saying the move was taken “reluctantly” but insisting it was the right time to make a change. United are currently sixth in the league table, three points off the Champions League places.
Sources told BBC Sport that the club’s hierarchy felt there was insufficient evidence of progress or tactical evolution this season despite significant investment in the squad. United spent more than £200 million on new signings during the summer, including the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024 after leaving Sporting, oversaw one of the most difficult periods in the club’s modern history. Last season, United recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish, ending 15th with 42 points, and also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. The campaign included a humiliating Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby.
Tensions between the Portuguese coach and the club’s leadership had intensified in recent weeks. Following a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday, Amorim publicly expressed frustration at what he described as interference from the board, stating that he had been brought in to be “the manager, not the coach”.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed interim manager and will take charge of Wednesday’s league match against Burnley. Fletcher, who has held several technical and coaching roles since returning to the club, was most recently in charge of the under-18 side.
Amorim departs Old Trafford with a record of 24 wins, 18 draws and 21 defeats from 63 matches, a win rate of just over 38 per cent. The club thanked him for his service and wished him well for the future as attention now turns to securing a permanent replacement.
