Mass movement of armed bandits poses threat to Kano’s peace, police warns

The Nigeria Police Force in Kano has raised concerns over a mass influx of armed bandits and their collaborators into the state, posing a potential threat to the region’s peace and stability.
In a recent intelligence report signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bashir Makama, Coordinator of the State Intelligence Department (SID) in Gusau, authorities highlighted the urgent need for preemptive measures to safeguard Kano amid increasing insecurity in neighboring states.
The report attributes the migration of these bandits to intensified military operations targeting notorious criminal groups across Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states. Many of these criminals, displaced by military crackdowns, are reportedly seeking refuge in Kano.
“This movement is particularly alarming following the elimination of several high-profile bandit leaders, including the infamous Halilu Buzu, also known as Halilu Sububu, which has left many bandits fleeing for safety,” the report stated.
According to the police, credible intelligence reveals that these individuals are relocating to specific areas within Kano, including Rijiyar Zaki, Tudun Yola, Jaen, Dorayi Babba, Rijiyar Lemu, and Yan Awaki after the NNPC in Hotoro. Another group is said to be settling along Shanono Road in Bichi.
The report further indicated that bandit collaborators and informants are purchasing properties in these areas, potentially establishing escape routes and safe havens for criminal leaders and their families.
The ongoing movement of these elements, who have a history of violence in Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto, is raising serious concerns among law enforcement agencies. Authorities fear that without immediate and decisive action, the bandits may establish a stronghold in Kano, threatening the stability and peace the state has long enjoyed.
In response, the Nigeria Police Force is being urged to deploy specialized teams to monitor land sales, rentals, and house purchases in the affected areas. The goal is to verify the identities of new arrivals from Zamfara and Sokoto to prevent potential threats from taking root.
As Kano braces for potential unrest, the police are calling on local residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The continued peace and security of the state may depend on swift law enforcement action and public awareness.
