Millions lost as fire ravages provision shop in Oyo

By Adejayan Gbenga –
A fire outbreak on Sunday night destroyed properties worth millions of naira at a provision shop in the Farade area of Oyo town, Oyo State.
The incident occurred beside a petrol station, raising fears of a potential escalation, but was quickly contained by the Oyo State Fire Service.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, said the agency received the report at exactly 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2025.
He noted that fire personnel, led by ACFS Tijani Bamidele, were immediately deployed to the scene where they found the shop engulfed in flames.
The fire team swiftly responded and succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the shop and the nearby petrol station.
Although a refrigerator and several household goods were destroyed, the fire service managed to salvage other valuable items, minimizing the overall damage.
Akinwande revealed that preliminary investigation traced the cause of the fire to heat from a refrigerator that had been left plugged in and unattended overnight.
He urged shop owners to adopt safety measures and avoid leaving electrical appliances on when closing for the day.
