Momodu backs Atiku, urges ADC to zone 2027 presidential ticket to north

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has backed former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election and called on the party to zone its ticket to the northern region.
Momodu made the call on Wednesday during an appearance on The Morning Show, a programme on Arise Television, where he urged the party to adopt a strategic approach if it hopes to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said defeating President Bola Tinubu would require more than popularity, stressing the need for coordination, structure, and consensus within the party.
The media entrepreneur noted that the ADC already has experienced contenders, including key figures from the 2023 elections, and should avoid “reinventing the wheel”.
Citing the political strategy that led to the victory of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, Momodu said elections are won through coalition-building rather than mere public appeal.
He also referenced electoral outcomes in countries such as the United States and Liberia to argue that factors like age do not necessarily determine electoral success.
Reiterating his position, Momodu declared Atiku as his preferred candidate, saying, “My preference is Atiku. I have never minced words on that.”
He further advised the ADC to focus on the northern region, where he claimed there is growing dissatisfaction with the APC, adding that key political figures in the region could strengthen the party’s chances if properly mobilised.
