The Olofun of Ode-Irele in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Samuel Omopariola Odimayo, has inaugurated a community vigilante outfit to strengthen security across the kingdom amid rising concerns over criminal activities.

The security outfit, known as the Malokun Vigilante Volunteer Group, will be fully funded and supervised by the monarch’s palace as part of efforts to protect lives and property in the ancient community.

Speaking during the inauguration, Oba Odimayo said the initiative reflected the commitment of the palace and traditional council to improving security in Ode-Irele and neighbouring communities under his domain.

The monarch disclosed that over 50 youths had been recruited into the outfit and were undergoing intensive training by a private security firm before their deployment across towns and villages within the kingdom.

He said the volunteers would complement the efforts of conventional security agencies in tackling crime and maintaining peace in the area.

Oba Odimayo also recalled the recent abduction of a 35-year-old businesswoman in the community, commending security operatives for rescuing the victim and apprehending the suspects. He pledged the palace’s continued support for security agencies in their operations.

While appreciating residents for supporting the initiative, the traditional ruler assured them that more programmes aimed at improving security and community development would be introduced.

Reacting, the President of the Coalition of Irele Progressive Youth, Michael Akinboyo, lauded the monarch for establishing the vigilante group, describing the move as timely, and pledged the support of the youth body towards ensuring the success of the initiative.
