Motorcycle thief escapes lynching in Ondo, handed over to police

By Boye Oyeyemi –

A suspected motorcycle thief narrowly escaped lynching on Thursday evening after being caught by residents in the Gaga community of Oke Aro, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The incident reportedly occurred around 7 p.m. when the suspect, whose identity remains unknown, allegedly snatched a motorcycle from a woman near Adu Memorial Secondary School.

His attempted escape was foiled by vigilant youths who quickly mobilized and chased him down.

Eyewitnesses said that after apprehending the suspect, the crowd resisted the urge to take the law into their hands and instead handed him over to officers at the B Division Police Station in Oke Aro for proper investigation.

The incident has intensified concerns among residents about the growing number of motorcycle and generator thefts in the area.

One resident, who spoke anonymously, described the attempted theft as one of many recent incidents, urging security agencies to step up patrols.

Gbenga Olagoke, another resident, lamented, “We’re fed up with the frequent thefts. These criminals now operate without fear, and it’s affecting our peace of mind.”
