MTN CEO, Toriola honoured with Osun state govt. merit award
MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Mr Karl Toriola, was among the distinguished indigenes of Osun State honoured with state merit awards on Monday, commemorating the second anniversary of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
Toriola’s award, presented by the Deputy Governor of Osun State, Hon. Prince Kola Adewusi, was accepted on his behalf by Mr Babalola Oyeleye, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, MTN Nigeria during a well-attended ceremony held in Osogbo, the state capital.
The event also recognized notable figures such as the Late Prophet Samson Akande and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Lasun Yusuf.
Among others honoured were Mrs Victoria Samson, Managing Director of BOVAS and Company Limited; Prof. Lai Olurode, former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission; Chief Yemi Elebuibon, an Ifa priest based in Osogbo, late theatre icon Chief Oyin Adejobi, and renowned content creator Layi Wasabi, amongst others.
In his remarks, His Excellency, Governor Adeleke explained that his administration chose to honour Osun indigenes who have made significant contributions to state and national development to inspire them to continue to do more.
“We sought out individuals who have made us proud across various fields. Our team of judges and reviewers thoroughly examined nominees from within and beyond our borders for today’s awards,” he stated.
“This is not a political event; it is a non-partisan gesture to recognise excellence and acknowledge the substantial contributions of our indigenes to the development of our state and nation. I stand before you as a Governor for all Osun people who appreciate the outstanding qualities in our awardees without political or sectional bias.”
Governor Adeleke announced plans to institutionalise the State Award, ensuring a structured nomination process moving forward. “Starting next year, we will appoint a panel of judges and trustees to oversee the award and nomination procedures, enforcing best practices for implementation,” he added.
Addressing the awardees on behalf of his peers, former Deputy Speaker Lasun Yusuf expressed gratitude for being recognised and urged the governor to address the pressing issue of Fulani herders in the state. “You have shown humility towards everyone, reflecting your family values in your administration,” he remarked. “The issue of herdsmen is serious; as a farmer, I have reported them to the police multiple times over the last two years. We need your assistance to tackle this issue effectively.”
Yusuf concluded by thanking the governor for honouring them with such recognition: “On behalf of all awardees, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for counting us worthy of this award.”
