Musawa hails D’Tigress’ historic AfroBasket triumph

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, marking their fifth consecutive title in the continental championship.

Musawa, who watched the final match live in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, alongside the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, praised the team’s outstanding performance in Sunday’s final, where they defeated Mali 78–64 at the Palais de Sports de Treichville.

She described the win as a testament to the team’s dedication, hard work, and exceptional skill, noting that their continued dominance in African basketball brings pride and global recognition to Nigeria.

“The D’Tigress’ achievement is not only a victory for the team but a proud moment for the entire nation,” Musawa said. “Their success showcases the depth of sporting talent in Nigeria and will no doubt inspire young female athletes across the country.”

Expressing her excitement over the feat, the minister commended the players, coaching staff, and supporters for their resilience and commitment. “I am thrilled to see the D’Tigress bring home the AfroBasket trophy for a record-breaking fifth time! Their victory reflects the power of determination, teamwork, and Nigerian excellence.”

She added that the federal government looks forward to officially celebrating the team’s triumph, which she said would motivate a new generation of sports enthusiasts and elevate the profile of Nigerian women in global athletics.

The D’Tigress are expected to be hosted at the Presidential Villa by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of their historic accomplishment.

The win also extended Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the AfroBasket competition to 29 games since 2015, cementing D’Tigress’ place as Africa’s dominant women’s basketball team.
