Musawa mourns passing of highlife legend Mike Ejeagha
The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigerian highlife icon, Mike Ejeagha, who died on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of the late musician, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Musawa described Ejeagha as a national treasure whose influence on Nigerian music and culture was profound and enduring. “The nation has lost a treasure trove of cultural heritage and musical genius. Mike Ejeagha’s contributions to Nigerian music are immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” she said.
She highlighted the late musician’s vital role in preserving Igbo culture through his unique fusion of folk music and oral storytelling, noting that his extensive discography—comprising over 300 recordings archived in the National Archives of Nigeria—reflects his commitment to cultural preservation.
“Mike Ejeagha’s impact on Igbo culture and music is undeniable,” Musawa added. “His mastery of turning Igbo folklore and proverbs into compelling musical narratives educated and entertained audiences for decades.”
Ejeagha’s music resonated across generations, cementing his status as a revered figure in Nigeria’s cultural history and a custodian of oral tradition.
The Minister urged Nigerians to honour Ejeagha’s legacy by promoting and preserving the nation’s diverse cultural heritage. “As we mourn the passing of this musical icon, we celebrate his life and legacy. May his music continue to inspire and educate future generations of Nigerians,” she said.
The Ministry called on the public to join in paying tribute to the highlife maestro, whose life’s work remains a pillar in Nigeria’s artistic and cultural evolution.
