Mustapha’s resignation exposes APC crisis in Kwara, says PDP
The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Senator Saliu Mustapha’s resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a major setback for the ruling party, alleging that the development exposed a deepening crisis within the party.
The PDP stated this in a statement issued on Friday by its state publicity secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, following Mustapha’s resignation from the APC.
Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, is a founding member of the APC and was among the political figures involved in the 2013 merger that led to the formation of the party.
Reacting to the development, the PDP said the senator’s resignation exposed what it described as internal divisions and leadership challenges within the Kwara APC.
The opposition party alleged that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had relied on “propaganda, social media optics and image laundering” to conceal divisions within the ruling party, which it described as a “runaway car heading to doom”.
The PDP noted that Mustapha’s resignation came days after the reported departure of another prominent APC member, Ambassador Kolo Baba Jiya, alongside several party leaders from Kwara North.
“Governor AbdulRazaq has failed his party just as he has failed the people of Kwara State. He now presides over a party that is fatally fractured, internally weakened and increasingly rejected by ordinary Kwarans,” the statement said.
The PDP also accused the AbdulRazaq administration of being hostile to the political growth of prominent Kwarans, alleging that perceived political competitors had been treated as threats. It urged dissatisfied APC members to reconsider their position and join what it described as a more viable political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
