NAC ratifies framework for Nigeria’s digitised modern addressing system

The National Addressing Council has ratified a preliminary framework for the development of a digitised and modern addressing system for Nigeria.
The decision was reached on Monday at a meeting of the council chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja, with representatives of government agencies and the private sector in attendance.
Under the framework, the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation will serve as the secretariat of the council and coordinate technical implementation, systems integration, interoperability and standards.
Other agencies, including the National Identity Management Commission, Corporate Affairs Commission, Nigerian Postal Service, National Information Technology Development Agency, Nigeria Data Protection Commission and Central Bank of Nigeria, are expected to contribute according to their respective mandates.
Speaking at the meeting, Shettima said the initiative was aimed at creating an addressing system capable of locating every community, business and household in the country.
He said the system must match the movement and economic activities of Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Agenda while supporting planning, commerce, security, social protection and emergency response.
“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, our duty is to build institutions that match the energy and mobility of our people,” the vice president said.
“We must build a system that locates every community, supports enterprise without barriers and strengthens government without compromising privacy.”
Shettima said the new addressing system should serve rural communities as effectively as major cities and be integrated with other digital public infrastructure.
