NAMA considers review of navigation charges

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is considering the review of navigation charges paid by airlines operating within the country’s airspace.
This move comes amidst complaints from airlines regarding escalating charges from service providers.
WesternPost gathered that the proposed review also extends to ground-handling fees, which remain a point of contention between operators and ground-handling companies.
According to Engr Farouk Umar, Managing Director of NAMA, the current navigation charge of N11,000 has remained unchanged since 2008, despite significant increases in air ticket prices over the years.
Umar emphasized the necessity of adjusting these charges to reflect the current economic reality, citing the disparity between the nominal charge and prevailing ticket prices.
In a recent interview, Umar highlighted the agency’s commitment to ensuring safety without compromising on investment. He revealed that efforts to replace outdated navigational aids are already 80% complete, albeit hindered by funding constraints.
However, he expressed optimism following the approval of N40 billion by the Federal Executive Council to enhance safety critical facilities within the airspace.
NAMA also pledged that once the funds are allocated, the agency will aim to address communication challenges effectively, further ensuring seamless navigation and safety for all air travelers.
