National Peace Accord: Sowore, Obi, Kukah, Onaiyekan arrive ICC for signing

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Cardinal John Onaiyekan have arrived at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja for the signing of the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The event, organised by the National Peace Committee in partnership with The Kukah Centre on Tuesday, is aimed at committing political parties and their presidential candidates to issue-based campaigns and peaceful conduct ahead of the elections.

As of the time of filling this report, only presidential candidates of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore; Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Also in attendance is the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

The accord is expected to reinforce commitments by political parties and candidates to peaceful campaigns, responsible political communication and the avoidance of inflammatory rhetoric as the country approaches the 2027 polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 19, as the commencement date for campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The campaign period will run until January 14, 2027, while campaigns for governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will commence on September 9, 2026.
