The leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed shock and deep sorrow over the tragic incident in Ibadan, which allegedly claimed the lives of 35 children in a stampede.
The NBA described the event as “utterly distressing,” calling for immediate action from the Oyo State Government.
In a statement on Thursday by Ibrahim Lawal, Esq., Chairman of the NBA in Ibadan, the NBA called for the swift establishment of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“It is sad indeed that certain individuals appear to have been permitted to commit murder under the guise of philanthropy,” the statement read.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred during a food donation event, which was heavily publicized on the radio. The event, intended for women and children, was held at the Islamic High School in Ibadan. However, poor planning led to an uncontrolled influx of people, resulting in the stampede.
The NBA has called for the arrest of all those responsible for organizing the event. “We urge the Oyo State Government to ensure that all those connected to this tragedy, either directly or indirectly, are held accountable, regardless of their social status,” the statement said. The association emphasized that those responsible must face the full weight of the law.
The NBA leadership also urged the government to implement stronger oversight, ensuring that no event attracting large crowds is held without proper notification, approval, and oversight by relevant authorities.
“We commiserate with the families who lost their children in this devastating tragedy. We reiterate our stand that all those responsible must bear the full weight of the law”, said the NBA.
The NBA also vowed to closely monitor the investigation as it unfolds, demanding justice for the victims of the tragedy.
