NCC approves telecom tariff adjustments, pledges consumer protection

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved tariff adjustments for telecommunications operators in response to rising operational costs, emphasizing the need to balance consumer protection with industry sustainability.

According to a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, the tariff adjustment will be capped at a maximum increase of 50%, significantly lower than the over 100% hike requested by some operators.

The statement read, “The adjustment was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability while ensuring services remain accessible to consumers.”

The statement explained that the new tariffs would align with the 2013 NCC Cost Study, with individual requests reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

“Implementation will strictly adhere to the NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification issued in 2024, ensuring transparency and fairness,” it added.

The NCC noted that tariffs had remained static since 2013, despite escalating operational costs.

According to the statement, “The approved adjustment is aimed at addressing the significant gap between operational costs and current tariffs, enabling operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation while maintaining service quality.”

The statement emphasized that the adjustments would ultimately benefit consumers through improved network quality, better customer service, and greater coverage. It also highlighted the NCC’s efforts to protect indigenous vendors and suppliers within the telecommunications ecosystem.

The Commission disclosed that the decision was made after extensive consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors.

“We recognize the financial pressures faced by Nigerian households and businesses and have mandated that operators implement these adjustments transparently and fairly,” the statement read.

Furthermore, operators are required to educate the public about the new rates and demonstrate measurable improvements in service delivery, the statement added.

According to the statement, the NCC remains committed to fostering a resilient and inclusive telecommunications sector that drives Nigeria’s digital economy.

“Beyond protecting consumers, this decision is designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry and support the growth of indigenous suppliers,” it noted.

The NCC assured Nigerians of its commitment to creating a balanced telecommunications environment.

“Our goal is a sector that protects consumers, empowers operators, and sustains the ecosystem that drives connectivity across the nation,” the statement concluded.
