NEC endorses ‘Renewed Hope’ 2026–2030 National Development Plan

By Kunle Sanni –
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, has announced that the National Economic Council (NEC) has approved the proposed Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026–2030.
Briefing State House correspondents on Thursday after the NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Bagudu said the new plan will succeed the current Medium-Term National Development Plan (2021–2025), which expires in December.
He explained that the new plan aligns with Nigeria Agenda 2050, a 30-year prospective plan approved in 2020 to guide long-term national growth. Agenda 2050 provides for six consecutive five-year medium-term plans, with the Renewed Hope 2026–2030 serving as the second in the series.
“The Council approved the proposed new national development plan, the Renewed Hope 2026–2030,” Bagudu said. “This will ensure policy continuity, consolidate ongoing reforms, and provide a coherent framework to accelerate job creation, improve human capital, expand sustainable infrastructure, enhance food security, and strengthen social protection.”
According to the minister, preparation of the plan will begin this month to allow President Bola Tinubu to launch it before year-end. The process will be broadly participatory, involving federal, state, and local governments, the private sector, political parties, civil society, traditional institutions, youth and labor groups, and other stakeholders.
Bagudu disclosed that three governance structures — a national steering committee, a central working group, and technical working groups — will drive the formulation of the plan, with co-chairs drawn from both public and private sectors. State governors representing the six geopolitical zones will also play key roles.
He noted that NEC commended the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning for starting the process early and acknowledged contributions from council members, particularly Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, whose experience with previous plans informed the discussions.
Bagudu stressed that the Renewed Hope 2026–2030 plan will bridge ongoing reform efforts and Nigeria’s long-term development aspirations under Agenda 2050, ensuring government programs across all tiers reflect a national consensus for accelerated and inclusive growth.
