NEC strengthens federalism, drives inclusive growth — Bagudu

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, has said that the National Economic Council (NEC) plays a crucial role in strengthening federalism and driving inclusive growth in Nigeria.
He stated this on Thursday, as President Bola Tinubu officially opened the NEC Conference in Abuja, a platform for reflecting on the country’s economic progress.
In his welcome address, Bagudu described NEC as a constitutional advisory body that fosters dialogue, builds confidence among states, and ensures cooperative governance.
He praised President Tinubu for actively participating in past NEC meetings, noting that the president’s reforms have improved the fiscal health of states and local governments while bearing the bulk of the financial responsibility at the federal level.
Bagudu highlighted the global recognition of Nigeria’s reforms, citing commendations from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and underscored the support of NEC members across party lines.
He added that the conference provides an opportunity to focus on sustaining momentum, equipping citizens with necessary skills, eradicating poverty, and achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
He also commended Vice President Kashim Shettima, NEC chairman, for upholding the council as a platform where every member has a voice, and praised governors for their cooperation in policy implementation, including efforts to curb oil theft, enhance domestic production, and enhance security.
The two-day conference, themed “Delivering Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development: The Renewed Hope National Development Plan,” concludes tomorrow, bringing together governors, ministers, development partners, private-sector leaders, and other stakeholders.
