NEC urges states to leverage NASENI innovations for industrial growth
The National Economic Council (NEC) has called on state governments to adopt technological innovations developed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to fast-track Nigeria’s industrialization.
This appeal was made during the 146th NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The session featured a presentation by NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, outlining the agency’s strategic roadmap for Nigeria’s industrial transformation.
In his presentation titled “NASENI Economic Transformation Through Advancement in Technology Transfer and Adaptation,” Mr. Halilu highlighted NASENI’s focus on key sectors, including renewable energy, health and biotechnology, agriculture, transportation, digital technology, construction, defense, and aerospace.
He also sought NEC’s support in areas such as establishing manufacturing industries across states, accessing local raw materials, facilitating land and seaport processes, setting up showrooms for NASENI products, and implementing favorable policies to promote the agency’s activities.
Among NASENI’s notable innovations are electric vehicles, solar home systems for rural electrification, laptops and tablets designed for Nigerian markets, solar irrigation pumps, and coal-based fertilizers to enhance agricultural productivity.
The agency has also spearheaded projects like the NASENI Troment vaccine factory, NASENI Portland compressed natural gas (CNG) center, and NASENI Renewable Park.
“Our mission is clear: to make NASENI the go-to institution for technology transfer in Nigeria,” Mr. Halilu said, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to transforming the country into a global innovation powerhouse.
He added that NASENI has secured $3.23 billion in investments and launched initiatives such as the DELT-Her program to empower female engineers.
The Council commended NASENI’s contributions to local manufacturing and industrial development. It directed the agency to expand lithium battery production in resource-rich regions and repair tractors under the National Asset Restoration Programme.
NEC also resolved to harness NASENI’s innovations for manufacturing and public sector partnerships, creating infrastructure, policy frameworks, and market access essential for economic diversification.
