New Alaafin: Oyo kingmakers criticize Governor Makinde over bribery allegations

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo

The Oyomesi, the kingmakers in Oyo State, have expressed dissatisfaction with Governor Seyi Makinde’s public comments regarding allegations of bribery during the selection process for the new Alaafin. They warned the Governor that he could face legal action for defamatory remarks after his immunity expires.

In a letter addressed to the Governor, signed by their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), the Oyomesi urged him to refrain from making further public statements on the matter and allow the courts to resolve the ongoing dispute.

The letter, signed by prominent Oyomesi members including High Chief Yusuf Akinade, the Bashorun of Oyo, and others, accused the Governor of undermining their integrity and the judicial process. They emphasized their dedication to upholding the traditions of the Oyo Kingdom and called on the Governor to respect the rule of law and his office’s dignity.

The letter reads in part:

“We recognize Your Excellency’s right to defend your actions in court, given the ongoing legal challenge to your recent decision. However, we respectfully remind Your Excellency that the court is the appropriate forum for presenting evidence and arguments.

“The Oyomesi, in their respect for the high office of the Governor of Oyo State, have refrained from joining issues with you in the public arena. It is, therefore, disheartening that Your Excellency continues to make public statements that cast aspersions on their integrity.

“Publicly maligning the Oyomesi, who are custodians of tradition and highly respected in the Oyo Kingdom, undermines not only their reputation but also the sanctity of the ongoing judicial process.”

The Oyomesi reaffirmed their commitment to upholding tradition and expressed hope that mutual respect would guide future actions.
