New twist as 14 Ondo lawmakers pass confidence vote on Speaker

By Boye Oyeyemi –
Fourteen members of the Ondo State House of Assembly have affirmed their confidence in the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Olamide Oladiji Adesanmi, urging residents of the state to ignore calls for his removal over allegations of misconduct.
The lawmakers, in a statement, faulted the claims raised against the Speaker and said the attempt to pass a vote of no confidence on him lacked constitutional basis.
The statement reads, “RESOLUTION OF VOTE OF CONFIDENCE BY FOURTEEN (14) MEMBER ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY.”
“WHEREAS, the Members noted that there is nothing like Section 92 (4) (c) in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as claimed in the Resolution that passed the vote of no confidence on the Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly.
“WHEREAS, removal of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker is not done in the social media but through the procedure clearly stated in Order II, Rule 9 of the Rules and Standing Orders of the Ondo State House of Assembly.
“WHEREAS, the Speaker did not divert the sum of Fifty Million Naira (N50,000,000.00) as alleged… NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by Fourteen (14) Honourable Members… A vote of confidence is hereby passed on Rt Hon (Chief) Olamide Oladiji Adesanmi…”
The lawmakers added that the Speaker had maintained transparency in managing Assembly affairs and had worked closely with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to advance the interests of the state.
They also pledged continued transparency in their legislative duties and urged the public to disregard what they described as politically motivated allegations aimed at destabilising the Assembly.
