The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist Dapo Sotuminu, who died in Lagos on Wednesday morning following a brief illness.
In a statement, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, described Sotuminu’s demise as a significant loss to the sports journalism community and Nigeria’s football ecosystem.
“This is really shocking. I have known Dapo for more than two decades and have always been impressed with his zest for thoroughness and, of course, his passion for women’s football from the inception of the game in Nigeria,” Sanusi said.
“Words are not enough to describe his stature as a professional and someone who showed immense respect and regard for fellow professionals and others.
“We pray that the Almighty will grant him eternal rest and give his family, friends, and the sports-writing fraternity the fortitude to bear this big loss.”
Reports indicate that Sotuminu fell ill suddenly at home and was rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away.
A seasoned and prolific journalist, Dapo Sotuminu distinguished himself in his decades-long career. He worked in several prominent media organizations, including TNT Newspapers (as Deputy Sports Editor), New Telegraph Newspapers (as Deputy Sports Editor), and Compass Newspapers (as Sports Editor).
Known for his suave demeanor, humility, and boundless energy, Sotuminu also served as the Director of Communications for the Nigeria Women Football League and as Media Director for the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
His contributions to sports journalism, particularly in promoting women’s football and athletics in Nigeria, earned him widespread admiration and respect.
The sports community, media fraternity, and all who knew him mourn the loss of a true professional and an irreplaceable figure in Nigerian journalism.
