NFF plans Super Eagles overhaul ahead of AFCON

Following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to take decisive steps, particularly on player selection, ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations holding in Morocco later this year.
The NFF has initiated plans to overhaul the Super Eagles squad ahead of Africa’s biggest football showpiece.
In line with the Federation’s resolve, only players with strong current club form and clear commitment will be considered for selection.
A top NFF official noted the need for urgent reforms following the team’s recent setbacks, including missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“There is an urgent need to reorganise the national team. We need younger and more committed players representing Nigeria,” the official said.
“We can no longer continue with players who struggle for game time at their clubs. Anyone playing for the Super Eagles must be active and consistent at club level.”
As part of the restructuring, head coach Eric Chelle is expected to arrive in Abuja for a decisive meeting ahead of the AFCON training camp scheduled to open on 10 December. Nigeria will play all their group-stage matches of AFCON 2025 at the Fez Stadium in Morocco.
The Super Eagles will open their campaign against Tanzania on 23 December before facing Tunisia on 27 December and Uganda on 30 December, as they seek a fourth continental title.
