Nigeria boxing team arrives in Angola for 4th Africa Youth Games

The Nigerian boxing contingent to the 2025 Africa Youth Games has arrived in Angola, the host country of the event.
The team, led by the highly experienced national boxing coach, Anthony Konyegwachie, has three pugilists flying the country’s flag at the multi-sport games, which will feature athletes aged between 14 and 17 from 54 African nations.
The event is designed to foster sporting talent, integration and cultural exchange among African countries, and also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
Nigeria will be represented by two male boxers and one female boxer. Abijuwon Faruk (50kg) and Solomon Joshua (70kg) will compete in the male categories, while Mayowa Ayomide, the sole female pugilist, will contest in the 48kg class. Also part of the boxing contingent is the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Vivian Azimene.
The NBF Vice-President, Honourable Omonlei Imadu, who visited the boxers in camp in Abuja a few days before their departure for Angola, praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its support and assured that the best talents were selected to represent the country.
“Firstly, I wish to commend the leadership of the National Sports Commission for their support. They saw the need for these young boxers to be exposed beyond our borders, and this experience will further strengthen their techniques and orientation beyond the ring,” he said.
“The boxers we have selected are some of the best the country can boast of at this time, and coach Anthony Konyegwachie has also done a great job in preparing them ahead of the event. We are very hopeful of a successful outing in Angola,” he added.
The boxing event will commence on Monday, December 15, while the Games, which began earlier this week, will conclude on Saturday, December 20.
