Nigeria, Brazil set to launch direct flights under new agreement

Nigeria and Brazil are on the path to strengthening economic and cultural ties with the planned operationalization of direct flights between the two countries.

Following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, met with Brazilian Ambassador Carlos Garcete to finalize the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).

The discussions mark a significant step toward implementing the 2018 BASA signed between the two nations, designed to boost air connectivity and deepen economic collaboration. This move comes after a February 2024 meeting between Presidents Tinubu and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Addis Ababa, where both leaders committed to resuming direct flights.

Ambassador Garcete noted the potential for immediate flight operations, suggesting that four to five weekly flights could begin once the Open Skies Agreement is concluded. “Direct flights will accelerate economic growth between Nigeria and Brazil,” he said.

Minister Keyamo echoed the ambassador’s sentiments, stressing the mutual benefits of the arrangement. “These flights will not only enhance trade but also foster deeper cultural and social exchanges,” Keyamo said.

To expedite the process, both countries will set up committees to finalize the BASA arrangements. The Brazilian government has invited Minister Keyamo to Brazil for the formal signing of the agreement, a milestone in Nigeria-Brazil relations.

Two Nigerian airlines, Air Peace and Caverton, have been designated to operate the new route, further solidifying the strategic partnership between the two countries. The introduction of these direct flights is expected to enhance Nigeria’s aviation industry and expand its international reach.

Minister Keyamo reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing aviation agreements that drive economic development and strengthen global connectivity.
